Who is Leffafriikki

Huoneeseen asennettiin uuden karhea Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 järjestelmä.

Movie nights

I’ve considered myself a movie freak for a long time. Or should I call it a hobby? Well, it’s certainly not a job, because after spending countless hours of my life watching movies, I can tell you that money has only ever flowed in one direction!

My passion for movies started at a very young age. Even as a kid, I wanted a projector and a screen in my little room. The projector was absolutely enormous, but it still managed to produce a pretty decent picture.

But when it comes to movies, what matters more to me: picture or sound? I’d say sound. Ever since I was young, I’ve needed at least some kind of 5.1 surround sound system in my room, and that “.1” has always been the most important part. I didn’t really understand much about audio back then, but I knew one thing: it had to be loud!

When I eventually moved to the United States to study, my passion for movies grew and completely took over. Going to the cinema became a weekly pastime, sometimes involving several movies a week. Naturally, my student apartment also had to have a projector and a 5.1 surround sound system. Back then, I used to order several movies a week from Netflix (back when it still delivered DVDs by mail) and watch them whenever I had the time. If I remember correctly, you could rent three movies at a time, and once you returned them, you could order the next three. What an amazing service that was back then!

After eventually returning to Finland and buying my first home, a detached house, I knew right away where the ultimate movie room would go. I had already ordered the equipment from Mareksound before I even had the keys in my hand, and the plans were ready to go. Finally, a proper home theater!

At first, the room featured an MDF screen, a 5.1 surround sound system, and a fantastic movie sofa. There was more than enough acoustic paneling on the walls and ceiling, but it sounded great. Later, the system was upgraded to 7.1, until…

One dark evening, while watching a movie with my wife, fiction suddenly became reality. Just as the speakers were blasting rain effects, actual water started pouring down from the ceiling onto our heads! A water leak upstairs had ruined the entire room. There was nothing for it but to rebuild everything from scratch, and this time, to do it “properly.”

We brought in an acoustic designer, completely rebuilt the walls and ceiling to the highest standard, and upgraded some of the equipment along the way. A brand-new Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 system was installed. We also got an acoustically transparent screen, allowing us to hide the entire front speaker setup behind it.

For financial reasons, I kept my old HD projector at the time, but that has since been upgraded to a proper 4K projector. The dream I had as a young boy has finally come true. Now, this is what movie watching is all about!

I’m a movie freak and an amateur, and I make no claims to be anything else. I know a lot about equipment, yet at the same time, I know absolutely nothing. I can recognize great sound and picture quality, but probably not in the same way a professional would. I love great movies, although my idea of a great movie might be completely different from someone else’s.

I only watch movies in my home theater or at a proper cinema. I hate watching movies on a 42-inch TV without decent sound. And don’t even get me started on commercial breaks!

These days, my main sources for movies are iTunes and Netflix. Both now offer great picture and sound quality through a 4K Apple TV.

I love cranking up the speakers for a full-blown action extravaganza, but I also enjoy sitting back and quietly immersing myself in a brilliant story.

On my blog, I write about whatever comes to mind: equipment, movie rooms, and films watched either in my own home theater or at a proper cinema. I might also share a few stories from the past or even write about topics suggested by you.

I review, reflect, and, hopefully, get to have some great conversations with others who proudly call themselves movie buffs.
